St Michael’s Roman Catholic Church

Michael’s church in Sonning Common serves the Catholic population in the villages north of Caversham and to the west of Henley. Our geographical boundaries extend to Nuffield, Nettlebed, Checkendon and Stoke Row in the north, Dunsden in the east, Mapledurham, Kidmore End and Goring Heath in the west and Emmer Green and Caversham Park Village in the south.

We have a Sunday congregation of just over 200 regular worshippers, but many more on an irregular basis.

Our parish has a very successful junior school, St Martin’s, in Caversham Park, where there are about 120 pupils, but we are looking to expand due to demand for places.

As the population spread out from Henley and from Caversham, it became clear that a separate church and parish was needed to serve the needs of the growing Catholic population who settled in the Sonning Common village and its environs.

In 1947 the first Sunday celebration took place in a temporary building and in 1963 building began on a new church. The new church was built and paid for in 1968.

Some modified services are listed here

St Michael’s choir is currently a virtual choir. Each week with the help of Audacity software they prepare at least one hymn and a psalm to play at our 10.30 Sunday Mass while congregational singing is forbidden. It has enabled the choir to work together during lockdown

The church remains open for our weekend and weekday Masses. Currently advance booking is not required. The Masses can be accessed live on YouTube and links can be found on our website. It is still difficult to plan future events with certainty so any activities will be shown on our website.
