Jonathon Abbott

A  Local Sporting Talent

Our local Table Tennis Club is fortunate to have 12 year-old Jonathan Abbott amongst its aspiring junior members. After only a couple of years at the sport, Jonathan is the Oxfordshire Under-13’s Champion and South of England Runner-up. In 2010, when he was j-abbottin the Under-11 division, he was ranked 11th in England, no mean achievement.

Following his recent successes in the Regional competitions, Jonathan will go to the National Finals in Doncaster in April. We wish him luck.

Jonathan became serious about table tennis following encouragement from the late Malcolm Griffiths, well known locally for encouraging youngsters to take up the sport. Jonathan is quick to praise the help he has received from senior members of his club and expert coaching he receives from a former British Olympic player.

Table tennis is not Jonathan’s only sporting interest. A member of Kidmore End Cricket Club, he represents Reading District and attends County training. He has skied since he was three, plays Rugby and soccer and when I met him he had just played his first game of badminton!

I wonder which of these sports Jonathan will settle for in the end? At the moment it is anyone’s guess but we will watch his progress with interest.
